Stefan Sagmeister is one of the most influencing graphic designers in the world today. He has given a speech at the Semipermanent event in Auckland August 15th/16th 2008 to introduce his product and new book Things I have learned in my life so far, published earlier this year by Harry N. Abrams.

Stefan Sagmeister started to make a list of Things that I have learned in my life so far in his diary which included: ” Complaining is silly. Either act or forget”, “Trying to look good limits my life.” ,
“Worrying solves nothing.” or “Everything works out in the end.”

Sagmeisters studio members transformed these sentences into typographic works. The book consists of 15 unbound signatures with 15 different covers. Shuffling the sequence of the signatures will produce a unique set up of the book.

The California Academy of Science re-opens in September

The California Academy of Science re-opens September 2008

The California Academy of Sciences at the Golden Gate Park San Francisco is home to Steinhart Aquarium, Morrison Planetarium and the Kimball Natural History Museum. The Academy is in the midst of an extensive rebuilding project. Pritzker prize-winning architect Renzo Piano is designing the new Academy, which is scheduled to open on
September 27, 2008.

The new rooftop of the California Academy will be the ” greenest roof” ever constructed and will be with its 2,5 acres the largest living roof in California.

“Our goal was to choose native plants that were well adapted to the climate in Golden Gate Park and would provide much needed habitat for native birds, butterflies, and other beneficial insects,” explains
Almeda, the Academy botanist “We also needed to select species that would look attractive throughout the year, since a visually appealing roof is a much more powerful educational tool.”

NYC based English artist David Byrne is well known as the former frontman of the band Talking Heads. In 1981 he started his solo career and released the album  My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts in collaboration
with Brian Eno. In 1988 he received the Oscar for the  sountrack of The Last Emperor in collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto.

David Byrne loves to cycle in the city and has now turned his passion into a design project for bicycle racks:

The department of transportation recently asked Byrne to be a judge in a bike rack design competition.
Byrne enthusiastically agreed and also submitted some of his own ideas. The department liked his neighbourhood themed designs so much they began installing them in the city. Although the competition is still running, Byrne’s designs can be now seen throughout New York City. Please see the competition outlines at

New Design Direction for Coca Cola

Coca Cola new sales strategy pays much attention on  design. But not only on design as pure decoration, the new Coca Cola bottles shall express: “How to keep the drink cool longer!” or “How to hold the cup easier!” explains David Butler, the vice-president for Design. Compared to the glass bottle, the aluminium bottle feels colder and more modern. Further it’s easier and cheaper to recycle. A set of 8 illustrated bottles has been designed by 5 Chinese artists as part of the Olympic campain. Please read the full article here
