Joana Avillez

Joana Avillez was born in New York and grew up with parents who were both artists. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and her Master’s degree in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts.
She says she likes “drawing” and “writing’’ together as one. With her excellent drawing skills, her sometimes satirical and fun works like manga are also well-received. She gets along well not only with people of her own age, but also with people of all ages, including her mother’s friends, and her friendships are very diverse in terms of age and nationality, which is very typical of a New Yorker. In 2018, she and Molly Young co-authored a book of visual text puzzles, D C-T!, published by Penguin Press.
