In the Journal section of Steven Alan's website, Joana Avillez says that her sources of inspiration are the people on the streets of New York, her mother who has been an artist for over 40 years, and Beatrix Potter, the author of Peter Rabbit. Influenced by these, she began drawing and writing about what she saw, and before she knew it, she had become an illustrator. Steven Alan praises her fun personality, saying that her unpretentious nature made him feel like he had known her for a long time, having just spent a day in her space.
